Interesting news - happened about 2 miles away from our house. Matt was working at home yesterday and heard helicopters in the area, so he went outside to take a look. He heard sirens, so he kept walking down the road and out to the main road, and not far was this:
"ATLANTA -- A small plane crashed only 20 feet from the front door of a DeKalb County home Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said at least one person on the plane was killed.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the Piper Saratoga PA-32 had just taken off from DeKalb Peachtree Airport when it went down in a neighborhood three miles away on Chamblee-Dunwoody Road near I-285 about 2 p.m. "It's weird because we heard an airplane and then for two seconds, it stopped," said witness Giuliani Brea. "Then we heard the crash." Bergen told Channel 2 the plane was headed to Coldwater, MI. The plane was registered to Women's Medicine, Inc. of Jacksonville Beach, FL.
Video from the scene shows parts of a plane scattered in a suburban neighborhood. Channel 2's Jason Durden said the plane appeared "absolutely disintegrated." Authorities on the scene placed a large tarp over the plane. "All of a sudden I heard a thump and I looked to my right and did a double take because there was a plane sitting in the front yard," said witness Mike Veal, who was driving by when the crash happened. "I saw a plane that was nose-first and it was torn up." Authorities said the plane landed about 20 feet from the front door of a home. It appeared the plane clipped several trees before crashing in the front yard of the house. Capt. Eric Jackson with the DeKalb County Fire Department said there is a "rather large debris field." He said they did not know how many people were on board but he confirmed there was "at least one fatality."
"This is a highly residential neighborhood. It's a true blessing that this plane did not come into contact with any homes," said Jackson. Bergen said that model of airplane can hold up to six people."
